little white Corvette on 66

Lajos’ dream trip had always been to drive Route 66 in the little white Corvette. Finally, after a COVID delay, we set off on the first leg of our journey—beginning with a stop at the Calgary Stampede to see Blake Shelton perform. A family wedding delayed our departure, and the concert date set our timeline, so we headed out via Manitoulin Island and boarded the MS Chi-Cheemaun for the Corvette’s very first ferry ride west.

We traveled north and west through Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, and into Manitoba. After four grueling 11-hour driving days, we cruised through the Prairies and finally arrived in Alberta. We made it — and so did the car. Aside from a minor fuel-pressure issue, which our mechanic quickly handled, everything went smoothly.

This became the first “rest stop” for our little white Corvette. She was tucked safely away in a local drive-up storage unit, battery disconnected, waiting patiently for the next chapter of the adventure.

We returned in the fall of 2022 and decided it was finally time to slow down and enjoy every mile. We vowed we would one day return to properly explore Manitoba and Saskatchewan, but for now we headed north along the Trans-Canada Highway toward the stunning Icefields Parkway and Jasper. We reached Prince George before turning south toward Kamloops and Kelowna.

Wanting a few relaxing days in Whistler, we headed north again along Highway 99 through Pemberton. This road is every driver’s dream — twisting switchbacks, steep climbs, endless curves, and breathtaking scenery. Lajos loved every second of it. I, however, spent most of the drive gripping the seat in absolute terror, convinced we were about to tumble off the mountainside. Thankfully, we survived — and now I can laugh about it.

We met up with our “kid” in Vancouver and stored the car safely in his condo parking garage for the winter.

In June 2023, we returned to Vancouver, and father and son pulled the Corvette out of storage. They checked the fluids, reconnected the battery, and took her out for a test drive while my daughter-in-law and I enjoyed a much more relaxing mani-pedi day.

The little white Corvette passed every test. After a wash and wax, she was ready for her next adventure — and her second ferry ride. Vancouver Island, here we come!

Unfortunately, I came down with a terrible cold or flu, which made parts of the trip difficult, but the car performed flawlessly. We landed in Victoria and headed southwest toward Port Renfrew before turning north toward Qualicum Beach. We crossed the island to Ucluelet before arriving in Tofino.

A boat ride and hot springs excursion gave the Corvette a well-deserved day off before we headed back toward Nanaimo and another ferry ride to our Vancouver hideaway.

By the fall of 2023, British Columbia was overwhelmed with devastating forest fires. We had originally planned to continue north toward Prince Rupert to explore more of the province, but with residents displaced and hotels beyond capacity, we decided it was best to stay home and out of the way.

The Corvette remained tucked away safely—until suddenly, she wasn’t. One evening our son arrived home from work to discover the little white Corvette had disappeared. Panic immediately set in. After several frantic phone calls, we learned that a misunderstanding over assigned parking spaces, combined with a building superintendent who clearly was not paying attention, had resulted in our beautiful 1964 Corvette being towed to an impound lot.

Thankfully, the misunderstanding was quickly resolved and the Corvette was returned—although now sporting a slashed front tire. The building covered all expenses, but it certainly added a little unnecessary excitement to the adventure.

June 2024 arrived, and we once again landed in Vancouver. Knowing we would return again in the future, we decided to postpone our northern plans and instead head south along the spectacular Pacific Coast Highway toward Santa Monica Pier—the official western starting point of Route 66.

The drive toward San Francisco was absolutely breathtaking. The Corvette handled every twist and turn of the coastal roads beautifully. The scenery was incredible, and now, with our GoPro along for the ride, we could finally capture the adventure and bring others along with us.

One of my favorite photographs of the entire journey was taken in a quiet, remote location overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. The little white Corvette stood proudly in the foreground while the iconic bridge towered behind her. It was timeless beauty—a classic car meets a classic landmark.

We traveled as far south as Big Sur, but road repairs from mudslides forced us to turn back and temporarily leave Highway 1 before reconnecting farther south. Cambria and San Simeon — home to Hearst Castle — are absolutely not-to-miss stops.

We stayed just outside Santa Monica and encountered the first real mechanical issue of the trip: overheating. Both the car—and the driver—were struggling in the intense heat. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed. A temporary repair got the fan working again until we could source the correct parts. After a quick repair in the parking lot of a local O’Reilly Auto Parts, we were back on the road and ready to begin the next stage of our adventure homeward along Route 66 — America’s Mother Road.

We left the cool Pacific coastline and headed east toward the desert. And just in case you are wondering—no, we did not have air conditioning. The heat was unbearable.

We made it as far as Needles, California—or “Weedles,” as some jokingly call it because there seemed to be more cannabis stores than anything else. I’m honestly not sure there were any other businesses at all.

Eventually, we decided to detour to the Grand Canyon to escape the brutal heat. As we approached the canyon, temperatures “cooled” slightly—from 48°C at 11 p.m. down to a much more reasonable 40°C.

The Corvette finally got a chance to rest while we explored the area and enjoyed the resort. Another unforgettable photo opportunity happened here. We took both a helicopter tour and a sunset Jeep tour. Due to a delayed departure, our helicopter tour returned after sunset, and our guide drove us directly to the airport to collect us. Waiting there was another perfect photo: a sleek white Corvette, several helicopters, and a family of moose all in one frame. You truly cannot make these moments up. That little car attracts attention everywhere she goes.

As this leg of the journey came to an end, we arranged for the Corvette to spend the summer in storage in Phoenix, Arizona. Lajos described the drive down from the mountains into the desert as entering a vortex—the lower we descended, the hotter both the car and I became. It was a long six-hour drive, but Phoenix offered the closest international airport.

When we arrived at the storage facility, we discovered it had already closed for the evening. Thankfully, we managed to track down the owner, who kindly reopened the facility so we could safely tuck the Corvette away until our fall return.

September 2024 arrived and we boarded the plane in Toronto in a comfortable 18°C, only to land in Phoenix in a blistering 48°C. Apparently, Arizona only has one temperature setting.

When we arrived to retrieve the little white Corvette from storage, the extreme desert heat had taken its toll. The fluids had nearly evaporated, and the car refused to start. Determined to get her back on the road, we had to improvise. Since Lajos’ hands were too large to reach where they needed to go, it was my small hand that had to squeeze down into the fuel compartment holding nothing more than a bottle cap. I carefully extracted small amounts of fuel so he could pour it directly into the carburetor and coax the engine back to life. Somehow, it worked — and before long, the little white Corvette was rumbling awake and ready for another adventure.

It was still fairly early in the day, so after reconnecting the battery, topping up fluids, and making a few final checks, she was raring to go. We traveled north to reconnect with Route 66, but the temperatures had not subsided. As we headed back toward Needles, the heat quickly overtook me. We stopped at a small roadside gas station while Lajos refueled the car, and I went searching for air conditioning and relief. I found neither.

Lajos entered the kiosk to find me lying flat on the floor trying to cool myself on the tiles. For any germaphobes — especially ones like me — desperate times truly call for desperate measures. I then bought two giant Slurpees, without the Slurpee, only the ice, and used them to cool myself for the remainder of the drive.

Did I mention the heat was unbearable?

After a familiar hotel stay and a refreshing jump into the pool, we were finally ready to continue our Route 66 journey and discover all the treasures waiting for us along America’s Mother Road.

There are several Route 66 travel apps that guide you mile by mile through this adventure, uncovering pieces of classic Americana along the way. Route 66 is truly a living time capsule of neon lights, roadside attractions, quirky landmarks, and small-town charm. Every mile feels like uncovering another hidden treasure.

As we followed the route, we captured incredible photographs of the little white Corvette proudly posing in front of these iconic landmarks. Highlights included Adrian—the midpoint of Route 66—Tucumcari and the legendary Blue Swallow Motel. Many locations have been beautifully restored, although reservations were often difficult to secure.

One stop I was especially excited to see was the Blue Whale of Catoosa, located just east of Tulsa. Built in the 1970s as an anniversary gift from a husband to his wife, it has since become one of the most beloved roadside attractions along Route 66.

Another unforgettable stop was Oatman, Arizona—an old mining town where wild burros freely wander the streets, greeting visitors in search of treats and attention. The winding sidewinder drive climbing in and out of the mountains toward Kingman, Arizona, was both breathtaking and nerve-racking, with sharp curves, dramatic elevation changes, and spectacular desert scenery. The route is famous for its “191 curves in 8 miles,” and after experiencing it firsthand, I can assure you they were not exaggerating. It was one of the most memorable driving experiences of the entire trip.

The trip certainly had its moments, but remarkably, the little white Corvette never broke down as we approached Chicago and the symbolic end — or perhaps the beginning — of our Route 66 adventure.

For anyone unfamiliar with America’s Mother Road, Route 66 was established in 1926 as one of the first major highways connecting Chicago to Los Angeles. Over time, it became the primary westward route for travelers, migrants, dreamers, and businesses seeking opportunity, adventure, and warmer climates. Eventually, Route 66 became famous for its diners, neon motels, quirky roadside attractions, and unforgettable small-town Americana—transforming the journey itself into the destination.

As we continue building our site and adding content, you’ll be able to follow our travels along Route 66 and experience these incredible places and adventures alongside us and our little white Corvette.
